Course Description

This course traces the history of Western economic thought from ancient to modern times, with an emphasis on developments since Adam Smith published the Wealth of Nations in 1776. We attempt to understand the interactions of scholars in building a discipline called political economy, the influence of technological change and the social, business, and political environments on economics, as well as the influence of economists on society. 

Topics include the following: 

  1. Introduction, 

  2. Ancient Greek Economic Ideas, 

  3. Early Economic Thought, 

  4. The Classical School of Political Economy, 

  5. Adam Smith, 

  6. David Ricardo, 

  7. Karl Marx, 

  8. Utilitarianism, Marginalism and the Rise of Neoclassical Economics, 

  9. The German Historical School, 

  10. John Maynard Keynes and the Principle of Effective Demand, 

  11. Monetarism, 

  12. New Classical Macroeconomics, 

  13. Epilogue: Developments in Selected Fields.
